Galaxy Note 3 Root (without tripping kn0x)

n3_coverMost of Samsung rooted owner’s will familiar with binary counter. Back then, rooting will only increase your binary counter which is reversible with the use of Triangle Away by Chainfire. However, ever since the launch of Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung introduce their latest security feature called Knox and place another trigger called Knox Warranty Void that will permanently change from 0x0 to 0x1 upon rooting thus voiding your Samsung warranty.

Below method will root your device without tripping the knox counter. What it does is it will only root your device and nothing more. Means, you are not going to get custom recovery like CWM. It depends on your goal of achieving root. For me, I wanted root so that I can use root apps (like AdAway; to remove those ‘pesky’ ads that appear within app). Not that I don’t want to support the dev. Sometimes the ads is inappropriate especially for minors.

Anyway, this tutorial has been tested to work on Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9005). Therefore, I am not responsible for any damage resulting from this tutorial. Follow at your own risk.

Getting things prepared:

  1. Download kernel files here: http://goo.gl/zCP4uQ
    • KERNEL_N9005XXUEND3.tar.md5 (root-able kernel)
    • KERNEL_N9005XXUGNH1.tar.md5 (as per your current version at Settings > About)
  2. Download and install TowelRoot (tr.apk) from your mobile: http://towelroot.com/
  3. Odin v3.09: http://d-h.st/85j

Now, Let’s begin:

  1. Go into Download mode (Shut down your device, then combine press Power ON + Volume Down + Home button)
  2. Press Volume Up to Continue at the Warning screen.
  3. Plugin your phone to the USB port
  4. Run Odin and press the AP button and select the first Kernel file (XXUEND3). Press the Start button to begin. (At this point, your device WiFi may not work. Therefore you need to use your data plan in order for TowelRoot app to work)
  5. Once your device rebooted, run the TowelRoot app and press the “make it ra1n” button
  6. The app will inform you whether root is successful. Otherwise, your device will reboot (means it failed).
  7. Reboot your device and go into Download mode again.
  8. Run Odin again and press the AP button and select the second Kernel file (XXUGNH1). Press the Start button to begin.
  9. Install SuperSU from PlayStore and it should ask you to perform update SU binary. Proceed and your device will again reboot.
  10. By now your device should have rooted successfully with SuperSU installed.
